I had the pleasure of getting an interview from Kaviza COO Krishna Subramanian discussing the newest update of their very popular product Kaviza VDI-in-a-box version 3.0. After interviewing Krishna and getting a really good demo of their product I came away feeling like this is the next big thing to take off in the VDI arena. Kaviza released version 1.0 back in the first part of 2009, and by 2010 they had already come out with version 2.2. Their Kaviza VDI-in-a-box product is aimed primarily at small to medium sized businesses (SMBs). What Kaviza aims to do with their VDI-in-a-box is to relieve some of the complexity and cost that comes with using SAN storage by utilizing only local storage. Along with version 3.0 of Kaviza’s VDI-in-a-box comes the virtual appliance aptly called Kaviza Manager or kMGR. The virtual appliance aids in the management of the virtual desktop environment.
This product runs off an already established server hypervisor. Another exciting note along with the announcement of version 3.0 is that it now not only supports the virtualization industry standard VMware ESX/ESXi server hypervisor, but also supports the Citrix XenServer hypervisor and HDX. What do I like about this product from Kaviza? Why did I walk from their booth smiling and excited? All you need to access the virtual desktops that are created is your favorite Internet browser (which is hopefully Firefox) and a thin client (which is hopefully a WYSE thin client). What? You’re an SMB and you have WYSE and the Internet? Then Kaviza is the way to go.
See the video below of the interview I had with Kaviza COO Krishna Subramanian and judge the product for yourself. If you are interested in the VDI solution the Kaviza has introduced you can obtain an evaluation copy for free at www.kaviza.com Thanks to Krishna for her time, and for the wealth of knowledge that she brings to the table. Also, it just so happens that Kaviza was awarded the Best of VMworld 2010 Desktop Virtualization category for their VDI-in-a-box 3.0 product! Awesome, looking forward to hearing alot about Kaviza in the near future, and of course VMworld 2011 in Vegas. Congratulations on your award.
