As of Thursday November 18th, PHD Virtual has released their amazing backup product, PHD Virtual Backup 5.1 for Citrix XenServer. This product is simply amazing. I was invited by Patrick Redknap to join in on a webex for a demo of the new product and it proves to be a streamlined and easy to use solution for your virtual backup needs. It is delivered as a virtual appliance and provides integrated and scalable data protection for your XenServer environment. It is integrated seamlessly into XenCenter, allows for real-time back up of hot and cold VMs as well as any VM templates you might have in your inventory, all while not interfering with or degrading hypervisor performance which is key to a successful virtual environment. Using PHD Virtual Backup 5.1 for Citrix XenServer is as easy as logging into your XenCenter, selecting the VM that you want to back up, right clicking on it, and then selecting “PHD Virtual Backup” and then clicking “backup”… done! In the same menu you are also given the choice to “restore” or open “console.” Are you sold yet? Wait there’s more.
New Features in version 5.1
* Advanced File Level Recovery – quickly recover files without the need to restore a full VM
* Flexible Backup Storage – extended support for network based backup storage
* Application Object Recovery – Use your existing tools to quickly restore application objects (database object, mailbox, mail message, etc.) directly from backup storage
* Support for Tape Backup Solutions – Quick and easy export to existing tape solutions
* Enhanced Retention and Archiving – Policy based backup trim options; long-term archiving
Verified Citrix Ready®
This backup and recovery solution is verified to work with XenServer as part of the Citrix Ready® program. What does Citrix Ready mean, and why should I care if it is Citrix Ready? Think of it this way, it’s pretty much a worry free guarantee. Citrix Ready should give you that warm and fuzzy feeling of knowing that Citrix has approved it as a viable third-party application to work with their suite of products. Here’s a snippet from Citrix about their Citrix Ready program:
The Citrix Ready program identifies verified solutions that are trusted to enhance virtualization, networking and cloud computing solutions from Citrix, including Citrix® XenDesktop®, XenApp™, XenServer®, NetScaler® and GoToMeeting®. The Citrix Ready designation is awarded to third-party products that have successfully met verification criteria set by Citrix, and gives customers an added confidence in the compatibility of the joint solution offering.
When, Where, How Do I Get It?
As for availability, PHD Virtual Backup 5.1 for Citrix XenServer is currently in limited release through the PHD Virtual Early Access Program and will be generally available this month. Being that it is in beta release at this time, you will have to be involved in PHD Virtual’s Early Access Program to actually get it. For additional details or to request participation in the Early Access Program, please contact a PHD Representative at 1-866-710-1882 or email@example.com. As for VMware, yes, there is a PHD Virtual Backup 5.1 for VMware vSphere and it is currently in beta as well and accessible through participation in PHD Virtual’s Early Access Program. I’m currently toying with the VMware vSphere version of PHD’s virtual appliance and it is nearly identical to the Citrix version, same usability, same menus, just in vCenter instead of XenCenter.
Note: The Early Access Release is for evaluation purposes only. Upgrade from early access to final release will not be supported.
