No single device from Apple has more fanfare and hype surrounding its release than the iPhone. It seems the trend has been a release of a new iPhone, or updated version (3GS), almost once a year. All signs are pointing to an iPhone 5 release date sometime in late September. While details are fuzzy on whether it will be titled the iPhone 5 or iPhone 4S, the amount of upgrades with the newest release points to an entirely new title. It’s rumored that assembly of the next generation of iPhone handsets is slated to begin in August, with a projected launch late in the third quarter, somewhere around September 30.
Right off the bat, the processor is getting a nice upgrade to the A5 chip that resides in the iPad. The next-gen iPhone will also be getting a new 8 megapixel rear camera, replacing the current 5 megapixel camera. Just those upgrades alone are worth making the upgrade to the newest handset. There are also rumors swirling that the next-gen iPhone will come with a larger display. I think that anyone who has Android envy will appreciate a larger display, which is inherent with just about every Android phone on the market. Coincidentally Apple has announced the release of iOS 5 which also points to the next release being titled the iPhone 5. Another prediction I think we all hope will come true is a smaller price tag for the new iPhone. Why? That’s simple, we won’t need 32 or 64GB iPhones any more with the creation of iCloud which offers the ability to store your iTunes and data in “the Cloud.” I imagine you won’t see any microSD slots in any new Apple mobile device, thanks to iCloud (which has been a long time coming).
To upgrade or not to upgrade?
My opinion is to definitely upgrade, especially if you didn’t jump on the iPhone 4. That being said, if you own the iPhone 4, it wouldn’t be that painful to wait for the iPhone 6 or iPhone 5S, you know it will be there next year. If you are still using the 3G or 3GS, now is the time to upgrade. For those of you out there who will be attending VMworld 2011, you will appreciate the faster processor, bouncing back and forth between Twitter, Foursquare and every other app you run.
Other interesting Apple news
While the anticipation is growing around the release of iPhone 5, let us not forget about the iPad. It’s also rumored that along with the release of the new iPhone, Apple will also release the iPad 3. I think it’s obvious that a new iPad release is imminent, in my opinion, iPad 2 should not have been release without the Retina display upgrade, that was a major disappointment. Look for iPad 3 to have the Retina display upgrade and possibly a thinner and lighter form factor than its predecessor. Another interesting item of note is the rumor that Apple is going to revamp the iPhone 4 and make it available as a pre-paid option at a lower price to extend the popular handset’s reach.
